ONLY FLUSH THE "3 P'S DOWN YOUR TOILET"
The City of Jasper Water Utilities Department would like to remind everyone to remember to only flush the “3 P’s” down your toilet – (toilet) paper, pee, and poop. Blockages can occur within the City’s main sewer lines, as well as in the private sewer service lines that property owners are responsible for maintaining. The private service line, also known as a sewer lateral, connects the home or building to the public sewer system and carries flows from sinks, showers, toilets, dishwashers, and washing machines to the public main where it continues along with flows from other homes and businesses to the treatment plant. Service lines can become clogged by items that are washed down drains or are flushed down the toilet; these clogs can result in sewage backing up into your home, and repairs can be very costly.
Tips to prevent costly backups:
*Remember the “3 P” rule – only flush (toilet) paper, pee and poop!
*Flushable wipes are made of materials that do not break down quickly like toilet paper does. They can bind together with other debris in the collection system creating a clump that can grow larger and larger until it creates a blockage in the system. Always toss used wipes into the trash instead of flushing them down the toilet.
*Keep a small trash container in each bathroom, preferably close to the toilet, so it’s easy to dispose of wipes, band-aids, paper towels, floss, etc.
*Keep FOG (Fats, Oils, and Grease) related materials from going down the drain. Pour used cooking oils and grease into a disposable container such as a coffee can or a small glass jar – not down the kitchen sink.
*Have a neighborhood association? Make it a topic of awareness at a community meeting.
