MINOR SPILL REPORT TO EPD
75 Bill Hasty Blvd., Jasper, GA

DATE OF MINOR SPILL: Wednesday, May 16, 2022

REPORT SUBMITTED: 5-17-22 to Deborah McClintock, EPD Cartersville office (Incident #100186)

LOCATION OF MINOR SPILL: City owned Sanitary Lift Station at 75 Bill Hasty Blvd, Jasper, GA 30143 (just south of Piedmont Mountainside Hospital on HWY 515)

CAUSE OF MINOR SPILL: Illegal dumping of pieces of wood, sleeping bags, clothing, and other debris into the sanitary sewer collection system that feeds into the lift station. Some of the materials made it into the lift station wet well and the materials clogged the pumps and caused the station to significantly decrease their ability to pump, and then completely quit on 5-16-22.

ESTIMATED VOLUME DISCHARGED: 6,800 gallons

RECEIVING WATERS: Overflow retention pond at the property site. Spill is completely contained.

WRF NPDES PERMIT: GA0032204

CORRECTIVE ACTION TAKEN TO MITIGATE OR TO REDUCE ADVERSE EFFECTS: City crews have completely cleaned out the collection system upstream of the lift station. The area around the station has been treated with lime, and signage posted at the site. Because no sewage has entered waters of the State, EPD is not requiring any sampling.

SPILL STATUS: The spill was stopped on 5-17-22 and City crews have completely cleaned out the collection system upstream of the lift station. The station is operating via the use of an emergency bypass pump while City crews continue to work on the pump and internal piping repairs. Any questions may be directed to David Hall, Utility Director for the City of Jasper 706-692-9102.

SIGNS POSTED: 5-17-22

CORRECTIVE ACTION TAKEN TO PREVENT FUTURE SPILL: Once repairs are completed, this station and the collection system upstream of the station will continue to be monitored closely for evidence of dumping. Additional security features are being evaluated to keep the collection system inaccessible.

MEDIA/HEALTH DEPARTMENT/OTHERS NOTIFIED: Pickens Progress, Know Pickens, Pickens County Health Department, State Health Department
