City of Jasper Social Media Policy
An important goal for the City of Jasper is to support lines of communication with members of the public, and to do so with a level of transparency that encourages citizen interaction. Through the use of our social media accounts such as, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TextMyGov, the City of Jasper’s intent is to provide the public with information we believe is important or newsworthy. Posts may also serve as notice regarding public safety, projects, initiatives, events, and services that the City offers.
The City of Jasper makes reasonable efforts to check all posts to ensure factual information is being shared, and that it is accurate and complete when posted. Our social media posts are made in “good faith”, and we recognize that circumstances may arise which could change the details of the original post as new information develops. The City of Jasper will make a reasonable effort to update posts as new information is made available.
It is not the intent of the City of Jasper to provide a venue or forum for the expression and/or posting of unlimited or unrelated comments, videos, or weblinks for the convenience of the public. User-generated posts will be rejected or removed (if possible) when the content:
*Is off-subject or out of contextIn case of an emergency, please call 911. Do not use a City of Jasper social media account to report a crime or an emergency situation as our social media sites are not monitored in real time.
*Contains obscene, vulgar, sexually explicit, or otherwise offensive language and content or links to such material
*Contains personal identifying information or sensitive personal information
*Is threatening, harassing, or discriminatory, whether towards City of Jasper employees or other commentors on a post
*Incites or promotes violence or illegal activities
*Contains information that could compromise individual or public safety
*Promotes or endorses political campaigns or candidates
*Contains links to third-party sites or advertisements
City of Jasper social media sites are subject to applicable public record laws. Content posted by the City of Jasper, as well as communication posted or sent through private messaging features by users of the City’s social media sites, are all considered public record. The City of Jasper does not guarantee your privacy when using one of our social media forums.
Any comments that violate these guidelines may be removed by the City of Jasper at its discretion but will be retained for the applicable retention period.
